Week One: Knowledge Systems

Task 1: Artefact - Maori Television

Interesting statement regarding using different methods and information to achieve the same goal (navigation).
In comparison of Western to Polynesian methods of navigation shown in this documentary I noticed Western methods are more system, research and fact focused where as Polynesian methods appear more centred on human relations and abilities.
These ideas were reflected back into the modern practices too. The conflicting beliefs on what the appropriate treatment of the found Taonga is. With a Western perspective being that the Taonga are a valuable resource of science to explore further the history of Maori experiences and traditions. Where as Maori have the perspective of leaving the Taonga in their traditional and natural location which reflects the importance of ancestral intention and trust in the stories inherited through generations.

Task 2: The Oxford Illustrated History of Science

The chapter points out that even though science is often presented as 'objective', or contrasted to 'cultural beliefs' like religion, it is nevertheless profoundly shaped by the time and culture that it operates within.

Reflection on science with focus on medicine.
In my opinion the purpose of health science is to attempt to understand in full the definitive workings of the human body in order to fix, enhance and benefit mankind and our quality of life.

I think this perspective makes us view health in a more reductionist light rather than a holistic view. By looking at what the exact issue is in our system makes us focus on very specific components of our health instead of looking at the whole system cohesively.

Task 3: Harakeke Sketch

Task 4:

1. There are 17 sustainable development goals.  Which of these most interest you and which, if any, relate to your investigation from Communication for Makers?

For me personally the Sustainable Development Goal that interests me the most is "Achieve Gender Equality and Empower Women and Girls". I think this is because it is something I am passionate about and I believe that it is achievable. Also, I think this interests me because of the current political state in the USA, with rights and cultures that have been fought for for so long to empower women being challenged and seemingly going backwards to work towards equality. Trump has demonstrated this through challenging and questioning funding of family planning clinics and programmes which work towards reducing violence towards women,  abortion rights and many more.
2. To what extent do you think the SDGs reflect holistic thinking?  Why?

I think the 17 Sustainable Development goals represent holistic thinking well as they incorporate factors which relate to the importance of humanity, the economy, and the environment and develop and understanding of how these correlate and intertwine. The The importance of the flourishing of all these sectors collectively is how we can create a sustainable lifestyle
